What is Global Privacy Control (GPC)?

Last Update: May 18, 2026

Global Privacy Control (GPC) is a universal opt-out signal sent by a visitor’s browser. This signal indicates that the user does not want their data to be tracked or sold.

When GPC handling is enabled in your cookie consent plugin settings, the system automatically treats these signals as a denial of non-essential cookies. This means that if a GPC signal is detected, the cookie banner will not be shown, and all non-essential scripts will be blocked, allowing only strictly necessary cookies and scripts to load.

How GPC Works

  1. On page load, the system checks for a GPC signal.
  2. If a GPC signal is detected:
    • Any existing consent state is overridden.
    • Consent is set based on the browser signal.
    • All non-essential scripts are blocked.
    • Only strictly necessary cookies and scripts are allowed.

Important GPC Rules

  • GPC takes the highest priority over other consent settings.
  • Any previously stored consent (cookies/local storage) is ignored.
  • The cookie banner will not be displayed if a GPC signal is active.

Priority Order for Banner Display

The system evaluates conditions in the following order to determine if the cookie banner should be shown:

  1. Is the Cookie Banner feature enabled? If yes, the banner is displayed.
  2. Is GPC handling enabled in settings? By default, Cookie Consent enables GPC.
  3. Is a GPC signal detected? If it is, the Cookie banner is not shown.
    Note
This occurs if you enable GPC detection. By default, Cookie Consent enables GPC.
  4. Has the re-display interval expired? If the visitor needs to reconfirm their Cookie acceptance/refusal, the banner is shown.
  5. Were new cookies added? If they were, the banner is shown.
  6. Were cookies moved between categories? If they were, the banner is shown.
  7. Otherwise, the banner is not shown.
