What is Do Not Track (DNT)?

Last Update: May 13, 2026

Do Not Track (DNT) and Global Privacy Control (GPC) in Elementor Cookie Consent

Do Not Track (DNT) is a browser signal that indicates a user’s preference not to have their online activities tracked. When a user enables this signal in their browser, it communicates to websites that the user does not want their data to be tracked or sold.

Global Privacy Control (GPC) is a universal opt-out signal sent by a user’s browser, indicating a preference not to have their data tracked or sold. GPC is a more recent and legally recognized standard compared to DNT, often treated as a formal request to opt out of data sharing under privacy regulations like CCPA.

How Elementor Cookie Consent Handles DNT and GPC

The Elementor Cookie Consent plugin includes a setting for GPC/DNT Handling, which is enabled by default. When this setting is active, the plugin automatically respects both the DNT and GPC signals.

When a DNT or GPC signal is detected on page load:

  • The plugin overrides any existing consent state.
  • Consent is automatically set based on the browser signal, treating it as a denial of non-essential cookies.
  • All non-essential scripts are blocked.
  • Only strictly necessary cookies and scripts are allowed to load.
  • The cookie banner will not be displayed to the user.

Important Rules:

  • GPC takes the highest priority in the consent evaluation flow.
  • Any previously stored consent (cookies or local storage) is ignored when a GPC signal is active.
  • The cookie banner will not be shown if a GPC signal is detected.

Configuring GPC/DNT Handling

You can manage the GPC/DNT Handling setting within Cookiez Settings section. This toggle allows you to enable or disable the plugin’s automatic respect for these browser privacy signals.

For details about toggling the GPC control, see Dashboard Walkthrough.
