Understanding Cookie Categories in Elementor’s Cookie Consent

Last Update: May 18, 2026

Elementor’s Cookie Consent solution helps you manage cookies and comply with privacy regulations. When scanning your website for cookies and scripts, the system automatically categorizes them to help you manage user consent effectively. You can also manually manage and categorize cookies and scripts.

Default Cookie Categories

When the system scans your website, it categorizes detected cookies and scripts into the following default groups:

  • Necessary: These cookies are essential for your website to function correctly. They are always loaded, regardless of user consent, even in an Opt-in (GDPR-style) model.
  • Functional: These cookies enable enhanced functionality and personalization. In an Opt-in model, they are blocked until the user provides consent. In an Opt-out (CCPA-style) model, they are always loaded.
  • Analytics: These cookies collect information about how visitors use your website, such as which pages they visit most often. In an Opt-in model, they are blocked until consent. In an Opt-out model, they are always loaded.
  • Advertisement: These cookies are used to deliver relevant advertisements to visitors. In an Opt-in model, they are blocked until consent. In an Opt-out model, they are always loaded by default but are blocked if the user opts out (e.g., clicks “Do Not Sell”).
  • Unclassified: Cookies that the system cannot automatically categorize. In an Opt-in model, they are blocked until consent. In an Opt-out model, they are always loaded.

Managing Cookie Categories

Cookie List Management

In the Cookie Management section, cookies are organized by these categories. Each category has an editable description that is shown to website visitors in the preferences dialog. For each cookie, you can view its:

  • Name
  • Domain
  • Duration/Expiry
  • Description (shown in the preferences dialog)

You can also perform the following actions:

  • Add cookies manually.
  • Edit existing cookie details.
  • Delete cookies.
  • Move cookies between categories using drag-and-drop.

Script Blocking

For third-party scripts that are not cookies, you can control their execution based on user consent through the Script Blocking feature. For each script, you can configure its:

  • Script name (for identification)
  • URL pattern to match (e.g., google-analytics.com/analytics.js)
  • Assigned category (determines which consent unlocks it)
  • Description

Scripts can be assigned one of three blocking modes:

  • Always Block: The script never executes, regardless of consent.
  • Block Until Consent: The script is blocked until the user consents to its assigned category. This is the default for the Opt-in model.
  • Never Block: The script always executes, typically for essential scripts.

You can also add new scripts, edit their configuration, delete them, and change their blocking mode inline.
