How visitors change or withdraw Cookie Consent

Last Update: May 13, 2026

Visitors can easily change or withdraw their cookie consent on an Elementor website by clicking the Revisit Consent icon, which appears after a visitor has chosen to accept, reject or customize cookies. When visitor clicks this icon, it opens the Preferences Dialog, allowing them to adjust cookie category toggles and save their updated choices.

How Can Visitors Change Their Cookie Preferences?

Elementor’s Cookie Consent plugin provides a clear way for website visitors to manage their cookie preferences at any time after their initial choice. This is done through a the Revisit Consent icon that is always present on the site which opens a detailed preferences dialog.

Example

A visitor wants to deny Analytics cookies after initially accepting all cookies.

  1. Click the Revisit Consent icon. This is often a floating icon on the page.
This opens the Preferences Dialog which displays a breakdown of all cookie categories.
  2. Adjust the Cookie categories: In the Preferences Dialog, review the cookie categories (e.g., Necessary, Functional, Analytics, Advertisement, Unclassified).
Necessary cookies are always active and cannot be disabled.
For other categories, visitors can use the provided toggles to enable or disable them.
In our example, the visitor would toggle off the Analytics category. 4.
  3. Click Save Preferences to apply the changes.

For details about designing the Revisit Consent icon, see Dashboard Walkthrough.

What Happens After a Visitor Changes Consent?

After updating preferences, the following changes:

  • Script Blocking: In GDPR (opt-in) mode, scripts in rejected categories will be blocked from executing. Only Necessary scripts will run. In CCPA (opt-out) mode, opting out specifically blocks Marketing category scripts.
  • Banner Visibility: The cookie banner will remain hidden until the configured consent expiration period ends.
  • Consent Storage: The visitor’s choice is stored in a local browser cookie.
Consent Expiration: The website owner configures how long a visitor’s consent is remembered (from 1 to 365 days, default 180 days). After this period, the banner will reappear, prompting the visitor to choose again.

How Does Global Privacy Control (GPC) Affect Consent?

GPC is a universal opt-out signal indicating a user does not want their data tracked or sold. The Elementor Cookie Consent plugin automatically detects and respects Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals sent by a visitor’s browser.

If GPC handling is enabled in the plugin settings (by the website owner) and a GPC signal is detected from the visitor’s browser, the plugin will:

  • Override any previously stored consent.
  • Block all non-essential scripts.
  • Allow only Strictly Necessary cookies/scripts.
  • The cookie banner will not be displayed to the visitor.
  • GPC signals take the highest priority over any other consent settings.
