WordPress uses the concept of “roles” to enable a site owner to control and manage what tasks (capabilities) users can or cannot do. A user with a WordPress Author role can upload files, write, edit, publish and delete their own articles. A WordPress Author can also edit their profile and change their passwords.
What can a WordPress Author do?
A WordPress Author can upload files, write, edit, publish and delete their own articles or posts, edit their profile, and change their passwords. For this reason, sites with multiple authors, or writers, may assign them contributor roles or use a plugin to create a user role with custom-made abilities.
Contributors can make and edit their own posts but cannot publish them. This reduces miscommunication or the risk of hired writers deleting their work if they are fired.
Many websites also provide authors with designated author pages to give their biographical information. This is usually done via the in-built author archive pages that present a list of all the posts they have written. Some sites even exhibit a list of authors with photos on their about page or sidebar.
