The term NFT stands for \u201cNon-Fungible Token.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put simply, it is a unique digital record, stored on <a href=\"https:\/\/ethereum.org\/en\/nft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the blockchain<\/a> (predominantly Ethereum), that provides proof of ownership of a specific digital asset. This could include ownership of anything like a jpg, a video, an audio file, or really any other type of digital file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some popular examples include the NBA, which sells <a href=\"https:\/\/nbatopshot.com\/marketplace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NFTs of video clips of basketball games<\/a>. Or digital artist Beeple who famously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/3\/11\/22325054\/beeple-christies-nft-sale-cost-everydays-69-million\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sold his art<\/a> for $69 million in an auction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know what you\u2019re thinking \u2014 but where does the value come from?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, the main thing about NFTs is that they are not able to be replicated. This means there is a finite amount of each token\/asset that can exist. If you own the NFT, you own the official version of whatever it is you own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means we (the market) can now place a value on that item. Before NFTs, there was no way to concretely prove that you are the owner of a digital asset, so the asset essentially had no way to be valued. Take Beeple for example. Before he got into NFTs, the most he ever sold his art for was $100 for a print. Now he could sell the actual original digital work for whatever the market will pay \u2014 which turned out to be an insane <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/3\/11\/22325054\/beeple-christies-nft-sale-cost-everydays-69-million\" target=\"_blank\">$69 million<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure, anyone could download the image Beeple sold, and while <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/06\/16\/no-nfts-arent-copyrights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">owning the NFT doesn\u2019t provide copyright rights<\/a> to the work, the owner now has definitive proof that they own the original. With that in mind, there are multiple reasons people are buying NFTs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>As an investment.<\/strong> The scarcity aspect of NFTs has led them to become collectibles, and historically their value increases after the initial sale. Similarly to buying a piece of art as an investment, people hope and expect the value of their NFT to increase.<\/li><li><strong>For a certain utility or access<\/strong>. For example, some NFTs are sold as part of a collection with exclusive access to a community. By buying an NFT from the collection, you get access to the community. NFTs could also provide access to real-world events and items. One example I have to share because they\u2019re one of my favorite bands is Kings of Leon, who released their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/pro\/news\/kings-of-leon-when-you-see-yourself-album-nft-crypto-1135192\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">album last year as an NFT<\/a>. Anyone who purchased it gained access to special perks, such as limited-edition vinyl or future concert tickets.<\/li><li><strong>People genuinely value the art<\/strong>. Some people simply value quality artwork that stands out to them. If you buy NFT art, you now own a piece of art and can even display it in real life via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.creativebloq.com\/buying-guides\/best-nft-displays\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">digital screens<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"nftwebdesign\">NFT in Web Design<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So, we\u2019ve established that NFTs are a new way to buy and sell digital assets. This is completely changing the game for digital artists because this is something that has never been done before. NFTs mark the first time digital creations, such as websites, logos, graphic art, illustrations, 3D models, and animations can actually be sold online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also happens to be extremely trendy and has created a huge buzz around digital art in general. The NFT market, which mostly consists of the sale of some type of digital art, reached a whopping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2021\/dec\/16\/nfts-market-hits-22bn-as-craze-turns-digital-images-into-assets#:~:text=Data%20from%20DappRadar%2C%20a%20firm,collective%20value%20%E2%80%93%20was%20%2416.7bn.\">$22 billion in 2021<\/a>, up from just $100M in 2020!&nbsp; This means digital creators and web designers are in the perfect position to take advantage of this new technology to earn money and distribute work to new audiences around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Essentially any digital art could be sold as an NFT. Typically, this looks like selling some sort of artwork like illustrations or animations. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/boredapeyachtclub.com\/#\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bored Apes Yacht Club<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.larvalabs.com\/cryptopunks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CryptoPunks<\/a>, which are among the most popular collections<\/li><li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fuzzies.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fuzzies Collection<\/a> by an illustrator named Hank Washington<\/li><li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/degentoonz.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Degen Toonz Collection<\/a>, which was created by digital designers<\/li><li>And countless <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.bybit.com\/investing\/top-nft-artists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more examples<\/a> of artists turned NFT-seller<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of the standard selling of unique digital art, there are also web designers like Marko from <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hipinspire.com\/web-design-nft\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hipinspire<\/a> who sells NFTs of full websites he previously designed for clients. You can even buy <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.color.museum\/\" target=\"_blank\">colors<\/a> as NFTs. The options are truly endless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"nftwebcreator\">How To Use NFTs as a Web Creator<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So, we know what NFTs are and how they are impacting the world of web design, but how exactly can web creators make use of them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Web creators have multiple ways to get in on the action of NFTs. Most notably, you could monetize this new technology by selling NFTs or making them for others, but you could also simply use it to grow your audience and reach more fans. Below are some of the main ways to use NFTs as a web creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sell Your Work as an NFT<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first and most obvious option is to sell your own digital creations as NFTs. As web creators, we produce digital assets like websites, logos, graphic art, illustrations, animations, and more every day. Now, with NFTs, we have the option to sell these goods to anyone who wants to buy them and become the owner of the original digital file. This is a brand-new revenue stream and there is even an option to earn royalties on future sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The standard way it works is when you put an NFT up for sale, you could either set a fixed price or put it up for an auction, letting your fans fight it out and decide how much they want to pay for it. This changes the game and could result in big pay-days as we saw with Beeple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, on top of the money you earn from the initial offering, there is an option for you to <a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4483346-nft-royalties\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">earn royalties<\/a> every time that NFT (your work) is traded\/sold in the future. For example, you could sell an NFT for $1,000. Then, let\u2019s say the new owner sells that same NFT for $10,000 in the future, you could earn up to 10%, which would be another $1,000. Note that you determine the royalty percentage before the initial sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Offer NFT Creation and Promotion Services to Your Clients<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The other option you have to monetize this technology is to offer NFT creation services to clients. There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmswire.com\/digital-experience\/a-guide-to-nfts-what-brands-need-to-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">many reasons<\/a> for businesses and brands to use NFTs. While this audience persona may not necessarily be interested in art\/design per se, they may be exposed to your work simply because they are now NFTs. The simple act of offering your work as an NFT can help you reach new audiences around the globe, helping you grow your following and expose yourself to potential clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"howtocreatenft\">How To Create an NFT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re at all familiar with cryptocurrencies, the process of creating an NFT (also known as minting) will be very simple. And if not, don\u2019t worry \u2013 it\u2019s not complicated, you just need to know what to do, which is why we\u2019re here. There are 5 basic steps to get your NFT up for sale:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Create a Crypto Wallet<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>First of all, it\u2019s important to understand that NFTs operate on the blockchain, and therefore require you to have a crypto wallet to transfer and store NFTs, and buy\/sell them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do a simple Google search you\u2019ll find tons of wallets to choose from, but some of the most popular wallets are <a href=\"https:\/\/metamask.io\/\">MetaMask<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coinbase.com\/wallet\">Coinbase Wallet<\/a>. Simply pick the wallet of your choice, download it, and get set up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Fund Your Crypto Wallet<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you turn your digital work into an NFT, you are essentially recording a transaction on the blockchain, which requires the network to do some work, costing you money. This small fee is called a \u201cgas fee.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make sure you\u2019re able to pay for this fee and mint your NFT, you need to have enough cryptocurrency in your account to cover the cost. You\u2019ll need to buy some Ethereum (or whichever crypto you plan on using), which you can <a href=\"https:\/\/metamask.io\/buy-crypto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">easily do within MetaMask<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coinbase.com\/how-to-buy\/ethereum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Coinbase Wallet<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that gas fees aren\u2019t a fixed amount and are dependent on the price the network is charging at the moment. On average, you can expect to pay around <a href=\"https:\/\/postergrind.com\/how-much-does-it-cost-to-mint-10000-nfts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$50-150 to mint each NFT<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Pick an NFT Marketplace<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to actually create an NFT and allow people to purchase it, you will need to use an NFT marketplace. There are many marketplaces to choose from, including <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/rarible.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rarible<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/opensea.io\/\" target=\"_blank\">OpenSea<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/mintable.app\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mintable<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/knownorigin.io\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kno<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/knownorigin.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wnOrigin<\/a>, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/superrare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">SuperRare<\/a>. Connect Your Crypto Wallet to the NFT Marketplace<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you click \u201ccreate\u201d on OpenSea it will automatically ask you to connect your wallet. Simply click the wallet you created to connect it to the marketplace and follow the instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"2462\" height=\"1030\" src=\"https:\/\/elementor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/OpenSea-connect-wallet.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-83641\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Mint Your NFT(s)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have set up a wallet, funded it, and connected it to the marketplace of your choice, it\u2019s pretty simple to follow the instructions on the marketplace and create the actual NFT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most importantly, you\u2019ll need to upload the actual file of the work (image, video, etc.) and select the terms of the sale. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Will it be sold for a fixed price or at auction?&nbsp;<\/li><li>How long will it be available for sale?<\/li><li>Will there be royalties paid to you for every sale in the future?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"environment\">NFTs&#8217; Environmental Impact and Solutions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to note that NFTs, and cryptocurrencies in general, have <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/3\/15\/22328203\/nft-cryptoart-ethereum-blockchain-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\">come under scrutiny<\/a> for their impact on the environment. As previously mentioned, when you mint an NFT, you are recording a transaction on the blockchain. On the Ethereum network, these blockchain transactions take a considerable amount of computing power to be completed, which takes a lot of energy. It\u2019s estimated that a single transaction on the Ethereum network has the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/digiconomist.net\/ethereum-energy-consumption\" target=\"_blank\">same carbon footprint<\/a> as 299,362 VISA transactions or 22,512 hours of watching Youtube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some may say NFTs aren\u2019t directly causing this energy consumption because the blockchain transactions would be occurring anyway for other types of transactions, there is certainly a need to be conscious of our impact when using this technology so we can make better decisions. Many digital artists themselves are <a href=\"https:\/\/cleannfts.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">taking action<\/a> to try and raise awareness and reduce the impact of using NFTs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ethereum does say they are <a href=\"https:\/\/ethereum.org\/en\/nft\/#ethereum-and-nfts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">working on solutions<\/a> to decrease the energy usage on their network dramatically, however, there is no specific timeframe for this to take place. For now, there are options to use alternative blockchains, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/solana.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Solana<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.algorand.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Algorand<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cardano.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cardano<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/tezos.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tezos<\/a>, which use less energy than Ethereum. NFTs can be bought and sold with these different blockchains on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/nfts-and-the-environment-5220221#:~:text=an%20annual%20basis.-,Where%20to%20Buy,-Energy%2DEfficient%20NFTs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">multiple marketplaces<\/a>, like <a href=\"https:\/\/solsea.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Solsea<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/solanart.io\/\">Solanart<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/rarible.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rarible<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"howtopromote\">How To Promote Your NFTs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Congrats!
