creating<br \/>guru themselves someday whether your<br \/>goal in sharing your knowledge is to<br \/>promote your skills and services or<br \/>perhaps to monetize your years of<br \/>valuable experience and expertise<br \/>this week we&#8217;re showing you just how<br \/>easily you can achieve that goal now I&#8217;m<br \/>sure you&#8217;re eager to get started<br \/>designing and building pages for your<br \/>online course but having a great website<br \/>is one thing having a great course is<br \/>quite another and as everything else<br \/>we&#8217;ve looked at in these master classes<br \/>the best way to approach a task and see<br \/>great results is to begin with thorough<br \/>preparation and planning<br \/>[Music]<br \/>the first thing that we want to do is<br \/>set time aside in our calendar to work<br \/>on our course we need to determine how<br \/>long we want to spend on research and<br \/>planning writing and recording and we<br \/>also need to set a deadline for when we<br \/>will launch our course this is to keep<br \/>us focused and time efficient we can<br \/>also make our research and planning<br \/>stage more efficient by breaking it down<br \/>into segments beginning with interests<br \/>speak to clients and colleagues about<br \/>what they are interested in learning<br \/>visit community news feeds and learn<br \/>what they are most interested in or<br \/>passionate about by now you&#8217;ve probably<br \/>already acquired plenty of skills while<br \/>working on elements or and WordPress<br \/>sites that other web creators are<br \/>interested in learning there are plenty<br \/>of related topics such as SEO<br \/>copywriting caching site performance Web<br \/>Design and so on and as professionals<br \/>we&#8217;re always looking to learn something<br \/>that will improve our own skills now<br \/>once we have a basic idea for our course<br \/>we should ask friends and colleagues<br \/>even past clients what they think about<br \/>a course on this subject is it something<br \/>that they would like to learn do they<br \/>know of other people who might be<br \/>interested would they consider paying to<br \/>learn these things how much should we<br \/>charge for such a course the goal of any<br \/>Content that we create is to draw the<br \/>attention of clients or prospective<br \/>clients we usually succeed in doing this<br \/>by striking a chord with a topic that<br \/>interests them so make this one your<br \/>primary factor when you decide on your<br \/>course topics the second thing we should<br \/>be researching are of course keywords<br \/>having found the best keywords for your<br \/>subject use them to phrase the title of<br \/>your course tags and the descriptions<br \/>keyword research will give you<br \/>tremendous insight for example which of<br \/>these two cause titles do you think<br \/>would rank better in search results how<br \/>to master Adobe Photoshop or Adobe<br \/>Photoshop 101 they might seem as though<br \/>there&#8217;s very little difference but that<br \/>difference translates into<br \/>search ranking being on the top or on<br \/>the bottom of the pile a great way to do<br \/>our research is to look to our<br \/>competitors knowing what the competition<br \/>is doing will help us avoid similar<br \/>mistakes and perhaps even do something<br \/>that they hadn&#8217;t thought of check out<br \/>their courses are they doing the same<br \/>content that we want to offer how can we<br \/>make our content even better and what<br \/>can we offer our students to give them<br \/>better value now this will not only help<br \/>to inspire us but it will help us to<br \/>understand the competitive landscape of<br \/>what alternative options exist for our<br \/>perspective students now obviously the<br \/>best thing any tutor could offer their<br \/>students is practicality bottom line<br \/>will our course provide practical skills<br \/>that students could begin applying the<br \/>moment they complete the course now once<br \/>we&#8217;ve identified the practical skills<br \/>that we&#8217;re providing we should make sure<br \/>to highlight them throughout the course<br \/>description prospective students will<br \/>look for courses with actionable<br \/>outcomes so make it easy for them to<br \/>find those outcomes when they read about<br \/>it in your course<br \/>with a good sense of what our<br \/>perspective students are interested in<br \/>and how to help them find what they&#8217;re<br \/>looking for it&#8217;s time to plan our course<br \/>a simple way to approach this planning<br \/>stage is through following the a B C<br \/>beginning with a for actualize and<br \/>outline we should be creating an outline<br \/>for every form of content that we<br \/>provide because it helps us stay focused<br \/>on the goal of that content but by<br \/>actualizing our outline we&#8217;re adding<br \/>practical value to our lessons and so<br \/>while course overall so think of it as a<br \/>well thought-out workflow answer B begin<br \/>with the basics and build up each lesson<br \/>until you reach the goal C keep it<br \/>coherent and linear because this makes<br \/>the context logical and easier to<br \/>remember going forward then backtracking<br \/>to prepare something else for the next<br \/>step is just complicated and very<br \/>confusing<br \/>a great way to see what a well-planned<br \/>outline looks like is by going to places<br \/>like Amazon there we could browse the<br \/>table of contents of the best-selling<br \/>books and videos on similar subjects to<br \/>see what material they cover and in what<br \/>order with our outline perfected we can<br \/>flesh out our lessons and obviously this<br \/>may also require some additional<br \/>research and study on our part some<br \/>great places to look for the kind of<br \/>material that will inspire our students<br \/>our professional blogs and forums other<br \/>online courses or better yet through<br \/>conversations with community members and<br \/>fellow web creators once we&#8217;re finished<br \/>creating our lessons we&#8217;ll move on to<br \/>creating the place where these lessons<br \/>will appear our very own online course<br \/>website<br \/>[Music]<br \/>we&#8217;re going to upload and setup the<br \/>lessons and the content for our online<br \/>course to an existing site in three<br \/>simple steps now as some of you already<br \/>know elemental recently released a brand<br \/>new template kit purposely designed to<br \/>provide a simple means for users to set<br \/>up and manage a complete and dedicated<br \/>website for online courses now a great<br \/>thing about template kits is that we can<br \/>just pick and choose the templates that<br \/>we want to use which is great for us<br \/>here since we&#8217;re adding our course to<br \/>our existing site and we&#8217;ll go right<br \/>ahead and do that now beginning with<br \/>step number one will install the<br \/>templates that we need from this<br \/>template kit the same way as we would<br \/>any other template now on the WordPress<br \/>dashboard we&#8217;ll go to pages and add a<br \/>new page to our site now this page that<br \/>we&#8217;re creating will serve as a place to<br \/>introduce visitors to the course so<br \/>we&#8217;ll name this page course and will<br \/>click on edit with elemental in<br \/>elemental will open the templates<br \/>library obviously will have to be<br \/>connected to our elements or account to<br \/>be able to access the library we&#8217;ll<br \/>search for online course and from the<br \/>results we&#8217;ll select this template right<br \/>here for a courses page and click insert<br \/>to add it to our new page like all of<br \/>our templates you can add or remove<br \/>widgets and use the options in the style<br \/>tabs of the widgets themselves to design<br \/>it the way you would like to see it when<br \/>we&#8217;re done we&#8217;ll click here to save our<br \/>draft and move on to step number two and<br \/>focus on the lessons themselves the<br \/>content that is essential to our purpose<br \/>the way that the online course template<br \/>works is by utilizing the advantages of<br \/>WordPress as a content management<br \/>platform to organize posts and archives<br \/>so we&#8217;ll be creating each lesson as a<br \/>separate post and then those posts are<br \/>going to be archived together as a<br \/>course now we&#8217;ll also be using word<br \/>presses category option to create<br \/>dynamic links to our lessons or posts<br \/>and we&#8217;ll do that right now by going to<br \/>the posts tab on the dashboard and<br \/>select categories and here we&#8217;ll set up<br \/>each lesson as a category we&#8217;ll<br \/>basically just copy\/paste the title of<br \/>each lesson from the<br \/>lesson plan that we created earlier and<br \/>as you can see the course that we&#8217;re<br \/>using for this demonstration only has<br \/>three lessons but you can have as many<br \/>as you need with the categories set we<br \/>can create our lessons and add content<br \/>the same way as we would any other post<br \/>we&#8217;ll add a new post give it a title<br \/>assign it to the category of the same<br \/>name then we&#8217;ll copy and paste the text<br \/>and the images we should also add an<br \/>excerpt and tags while we here when<br \/>we&#8217;re done we&#8217;ll click on save draft<br \/>because it&#8217;s always better to be safe<br \/>than sorry now there are a couple of<br \/>things that we could do to make our<br \/>course look even more professional it&#8217;s<br \/>considered good practice as well as good<br \/>incentive for students to set up a<br \/>timing system and monitor time<br \/>management for our lessons we could add<br \/>some custom dynamic fields to our post<br \/>pages showing the estimated time it<br \/>should take a student to complete each<br \/>lesson and to do this we&#8217;ll click on<br \/>these three dots or menu icon in the top<br \/>right hand corner we&#8217;ll go down to the<br \/>bottom of this menu and click on options<br \/>and then make sure that the custom<br \/>fields option is selected now we may<br \/>have to reload the page for this change<br \/>to take effect so if you haven&#8217;t saved<br \/>your draft do that first<br \/>now that the custom fields option is<br \/>accessible we&#8217;ll click here on enter new<br \/>so that we can create a completely new<br \/>field with a new name and we&#8217;ll call it<br \/>estimated time to complete lesson now<br \/>this is just a label for us to<br \/>understand what this is and we&#8217;ll also<br \/>add the value of this particular lesson<br \/>let&#8217;s estimate it as being 25 minutes<br \/>and we&#8217;ll click on add custom field and<br \/>it&#8217;s done another thing that we could do<br \/>to spruce up our lesson pages is to move<br \/>on to step number three and design a<br \/>cool template for our lessons now while<br \/>we&#8217;re already here on WordPress<br \/>dashboard we&#8217;ll go into the templates<br \/>tab and with theme builder selected<br \/>we&#8217;ll go to set up a template for our<br \/>lesson post the same way as we would any<br \/>other type of post we&#8217;ll add new select<br \/>single then select post as our type of<br \/>single asset we&#8217;ll name it<br \/>lesson and click on create template now<br \/>we can skip this and go straight on to<br \/>the elements or editor to create a<br \/>design from<br \/>scratch or we could use the options here<br \/>in the library and save ourselves a lot<br \/>of time just by searching for the course<br \/>single post or single lesson template<br \/>from the kit that we&#8217;ve already borrowed<br \/>from and as you can see we have two<br \/>almost identical templates now the<br \/>difference is this button right here<br \/>this template serves as a template for<br \/>the last lesson of the course with this<br \/>button placed here for the student to<br \/>click on which could be either linked to<br \/>a pop-up or a page to congratulate our<br \/>students upon finishing the course we<br \/>could also use this buttons dynamic<br \/>links to register the students as having<br \/>completed the course<br \/>personally I don&#8217;t honestly feel that we<br \/>need this year as we&#8217;re creating a<br \/>course as simply as possible so I&#8217;ll<br \/>just select this simple template and<br \/>we&#8217;ll click insert and use it for all of<br \/>our lessons now while we here we can add<br \/>a few extra elements such as the<br \/>estimated time field that we created<br \/>earlier to do that we&#8217;ll go to the<br \/>widget library and search for the post<br \/>info widget then we&#8217;ll drag and place it<br \/>on our page then with the widget<br \/>selected we&#8217;ll return to the editor<br \/>panel and in the content tab we&#8217;ll<br \/>delete all of the superfluous fields<br \/>we&#8217;ll leave just one and click on it to<br \/>access the options we&#8217;ll change the<br \/>field type to custom then just beneath<br \/>that we&#8217;ll click on this icon here to<br \/>access the dynamic tags and from the<br \/>menu we&#8217;ll select the post custom field<br \/>and with the post custom field linked<br \/>we&#8217;ll click on it again to access its<br \/>settings and select our estimated time<br \/>field in the key option if we want to we<br \/>can also go to the Advanced section and<br \/>add a label to appear before the field<br \/>estimated time to complete this lesson<br \/>and like everything else we can go into<br \/>the style tab and set the typography and<br \/>the color of the field any way we wish<br \/>now once we&#8217;re happy with our template<br \/>design we&#8217;ll publish it and set the<br \/>conditions to appear according to<br \/>specific categories which in our case<br \/>are also specific lessons this way we<br \/>set this template to appear with all of<br \/>the lessons and click Save now I&#8217;ll go<br \/>to one of my posts and check that<br \/>everything is OK and as you can see our<br \/>content is nestled nicely within our<br \/>single post or should I say single<br \/>lesson template now I&#8217;d like to go to<br \/>our course page because I&#8217;d like to show<br \/>you a quick way to link up our lessons<br \/>now as you can see we have a nice toggle<br \/>widget where we can list all of our<br \/>lessons and all we need to do is select<br \/>the widget and on the editor panel in<br \/>the content tab we&#8217;ll edit the text to<br \/>suit our lessons and to link each<br \/>section of the toggle to our actual<br \/>lesson we&#8217;ll just add some text begin<br \/>this lesson and use the hyper text<br \/>options to turn the text into a<br \/>hyperlink we&#8217;ll click on the settings or<br \/>link options and here we&#8217;ll select the<br \/>appropriate lesson from the list and<br \/>click update and we&#8217;ll repeat this for<br \/>the rest of our lessons alternatively we<br \/>could just as easily create a menu back<br \/>on the wordpress dashboard by going to<br \/>the appearance tab and selecting menus<br \/>and there in the dialog box create a<br \/>menu using the categories option thus<br \/>creating a lesson menu that we can link<br \/>to a navigation or nav menu widget on<br \/>our course page<br \/>now with our lessons set up online and<br \/>our website organized the next step is<br \/>monetization while this is an optional<br \/>step for some for many others especially<br \/>as we see our way through the covert 19<br \/>crisis monetizing their course online is<br \/>crucial<br \/>either way it&#8217;s a very simple step the<br \/>simplest way to monetize your content<br \/>that we could recommend is by creating a<br \/>pop-up in the element or theme builder<br \/>now in practice this pop-up can serve to<br \/>block content from view only granting<br \/>access to viewers who have paid for a<br \/>subscription to your content now as you<br \/>can see the template kit doesn&#8217;t include<br \/>a payment system where you can charge<br \/>users for the course this requires a<br \/>professional purpose-built learning<br \/>management system or LMS plugin if once<br \/>you&#8217;ve completed setting up your website<br \/>you prefer to monetize your online<br \/>course using an LMS there are some great<br \/>tools out there among them we would<br \/>highly recommend lifter LMS learn &#8211; or<br \/>member press these will also help you to<br \/>manage the financial transactions<br \/>involved in course enrollment this week<br \/>we looked at online courses not just a<br \/>what makes a course great but also how<br \/>to set up our very own online course and<br
