subject of this masterclass is one<br \\\/>that we've been excited about for some<br \\\/>time and for two reasons first this is<br \\\/>something that many of you have been<br \\\/>asking for and as if that wasn't<br \\\/>important enough this week we're dealing<br \\\/>with a fascinating subject that is<br \\\/>connected to almost every aspect of<br \\\/>designing building and managing a<br \\\/>website so buckle up and start your<br \\\/>engine because this master class we're<br \\\/>taking on issues of speed<br \\\/>no matter whether we're selling products<br \\\/>services ideas or generating awareness<br \\\/>the speed of our website is the speed of<br \\\/>our business speed is something that is<br \\\/>always on our minds not just when we're<br \\\/>designing and building sites but when<br \\\/>we're maintaining and managing our sites<br \\\/>to speed concerns each and every one of<br \\\/>us no matter what our level of<br \\\/>experience is and we would sincerely<br \\\/>love nothing more than to cover as much<br \\\/>as possible in one fantastic master<br \\\/>class but you've got to admit that there<br \\\/>would be somewhat ironic if we published<br \\\/>a master class devoted to speed that<br \\\/>also ran several hours long<br \\\/>instead we're setting aside what we<br \\\/>consider to be genuine expert material<br \\\/>for a future separate master class for<br \\\/>expert level developers and web builders<br \\\/>meanwhile we're bringing you a two-part<br \\\/>master pass chock full of information<br \\\/>and insight with everything else which<br \\\/>is a lot in its own right we'll<br \\\/>understand the journey that our site<br \\\/>data takes on route to the user will<br \\\/>examine the points along this route that<br \\\/>can potentially slow down our load time<br \\\/>and the solutions that we can adopt in<br \\\/>order to avoid these pitfalls and<br \\\/>accelerate our load speed and of course<br \\\/>the best ways to test our site speed<br \\\/>this week will be examining a breakdown<br \\\/>of the journey focusing on the<br \\\/>informations point of origin and explore<br \\\/>ways to speed up our load time server<br \\\/>side<br \\\/>because as individuals we don't normally<br \\\/>have the capacity needed to serve data<br \\\/>to countless users simultaneously and<br \\\/>keep it all safe and secure<br \\\/>we usually entrust our website data to a<br \\\/>host now this host allocates a server<br \\\/>for our needs and the reason that we<br \\\/>call it a server is because it works<br \\\/>kind of like a server in a restaurant a<br \\\/>user wanting to see our site will use a<br \\\/>browser sometimes referred to as the<br \\\/>client in this sense to contact our<br \\\/>server and the moment that this happens<br \\\/>the whole process kicks into action what<br \\\/>the user sends through their client is a<br \\\/>request technically known as an HTTP<br \\\/>request in return our faithful server<br \\\/>replies with a responding message that<br \\\/>contains HTML that's the information<br \\\/>telling the client how to organize and<br \\\/>display all the content of our site as<br \\\/>well as instructions for the client<br \\\/>issue further requests for content<br \\\/>assets that also belong to the website<br \\\/>that the client didn't previously know<br \\\/>about hence we get a series of wrapping<br \\\/>requests and responses going back and<br \\\/>forth like a super fast game of ping<br \\\/>pong the amount of time that it takes<br \\\/>from the moment a client sends an<br \\\/>instance of data as a pink till the<br \\\/>moment pongas received back is the way<br \\\/>that we measure speed as web builders we<br \\\/>are responsible for the return journey<br \\\/>and the time that it takes for a user to<br \\\/>receive their reply along this return<br \\\/>journey we have a couple of stations<br \\\/>having received and processed the<br \\\/>request from the client our data sets<br \\\/>out from the server via the platform<br \\\/>which in our case is WordPress and all<br \\\/>the plugins installed on it then it<br \\\/>continues to the system where the client<br \\\/>is operating to be rendered into the<br \\\/>content that our user is curious to see<br \\\/>Google and their counterparts measure<br \\\/>the time it takes from that very first<br \\\/>ping until that very last piece of data<br \\\/>is rendered to complete the page on the<br \\\/>client side where the user can see it as<br \\\/>page load time page load time is an<br \\\/>important criteria for search<br \\\/>engines as their users look to them to<br \\\/>provide a list of sites with the best<br \\\/>user experience possible and we don't<br \\\/>have to be googled to know how impatient<br \\\/>a user can get just waiting for a page<br \\\/>to load so it shouldn't surprise us to<br \\\/>learn that the faster our page loads the<br \\\/>higher the ranking of that page will be<br \\\/>in the search results the higher the<br \\\/>potential we'll have for traffic to come<br \\\/>flowing to our site so how do we make<br \\\/>this happen let's look at the things<br \\\/>that can slow our site down and how to<br \\\/>fix them starting with our first station<br \\\/>along our journey this server the first<br \\\/>thing we need to address is the location<br \\\/>of the server as a rule keep your users<br \\\/>close and your data closer if you want<br \\\/>to start a fast food business and your<br \\\/>clients are predominantly from New York<br \\\/>establishing your restaurant in Los<br \\\/>Angeles will not be good business<br \\\/>instead you should move it as close as<br \\\/>possible to where your client base is<br \\\/>located the big hosting companies have<br \\\/>servers located on every continent and<br \\\/>it's up to us to ask our hosts to be<br \\\/>located as close to our users as<br \\\/>possible another way to cut the travel<br \\\/>distance is by using content delivery<br \\\/>networks or CD ends<br \\\/>these are caches situated along the road<br \\\/>between the client and the server that<br \\\/>store static content assets such as text<br \\\/>graphics etc that we have no reason to<br \\\/>change so that the client doesn't have<br \\\/>to wait too long to receive the data<br \\\/>that we're shipping again this is<br \\\/>something that we need to ask from our<br \\\/>hosting service now once our server<br \\\/>receives a request for data it processes<br \\\/>it think of it our server placing an<br \\\/>order with a short-order cook in the<br \\\/>back kitchen if we want our order to be<br \\\/>out fast and with no hiccups we need a<br \\\/>fast reliable kitchen staff or an our<br \\\/>case effective and efficient server<br \\\/>software now there are many host<br \\\/>services that still run on software<br \\\/>stacks that include Apache MySQL and PHP<br \\\/>without going into too much technical<br \\\/>detail what we want to do is make sure<br \\\/>that the hosts<br \\\/>service that we work with is or can<br \\\/>upgrade our service tax software from<br \\\/>Apache to engine X from MySQL to Moorea<br \\\/>DB and make sure that our PHP version is<br \\\/>at least PHP 7 in some cases this alone<br \\\/>can reduce our page load time by up to<br \\\/>50% now generally speaking hosting<br \\\/>services keep our data on shared servers<br \\\/>in other words we're sharing the storage<br \\\/>space and some of the service with other<br \\\/>web sites residing in the same storage<br \\\/>system as we are now<br \\\/>some experts maintain that this too is<br \\\/>something that can impair our page load<br \\\/>time and recommend opting for a virtual<br \\\/>private server or VPS the thing about<br \\\/>using a VPS is that it also means a lot<br \\\/>of work for us the moderators worse if<br \\\/>we're not experts in such things we're<br \\\/>putting our site and our business at an<br \\\/>unnecessary risk yes you could improve<br \\\/>your page load time using a VPS but as<br \\\/>many experts will tell you there are<br \\\/>several premium hosting service that our<br \\\/>WordPress dedicated like SiteGround<br \\\/>WP engine and flywheel already providing<br \\\/>great service so that we don't have to<br \\\/>deal with the headache and the hassle<br \\\/>having grasped how users get our data<br \\\/>how the client communicates with our<br \\\/>server and the ways that we can improve<br \\\/>and speed up this communication next<br \\\/>master class will be pushing the pedal<br \\\/>to the metal and see how we can speed up<br \\\/>the flow of data even more by modifying<br \\\/>our WordPress platform and our content<br \\\/>footprint we'll also be taking a site<br \\\/>that will audit to show how all of these<br \\\/>tips and advice work in practice if you<br \\\/>have any further advice tips or insight<br \\\/>that could help other users speed up<br \\\/>their websites please share it in the<br \\\/>comments below if you have any<br \\\/>criticisms we are equally interested in<br \\\/>your thoughts and if you've enjoyed this<br \\\/>masterclass and you found it helpful<br \\\/>insightful or inspiring make sure you<br \\\/>click the subscribe button and tap that<br \\\/>bell so that you don't miss out and our<br \\\/>next<br \\\/>to class part two of our masterclass on<br \\\/>accelerating our page load speed after<br \\\/>all our goal is to be the best at<br \\\/>helping others excel at their craft<br \\\/>thanks for watching Cheers<\\\/p>","inner_tab_content_1":"<p>This week we begin with the first in a two-part masterclass on main causes of slow page loading, and the solutions, tips, and advice that could help us accelerate our page load time to get ahead of the competition.<\\\/p><p>This episode covers a lot of valuable web-building information for all levels looking to learn about:<br \\\/><br \\\/>How site data travels from the server to the user 02:10<br \\\/>How we measure internet speed 03:22<br \\\/>What is Page Load Time 04:07<br \\\/>What we can do to speed our server data 05:01<br \\\/>Using content delivery networks (CDNs) 05:40<br \\\/>Server software 06:20<br \\\/>Shared servers vs. virtual private servers (VPS) to Speed up Your WordPress Website \\u2014 Part 2 \\u2014 Monday Masterclass","youtube_url":"https:\\\/\\\/youtu.be\\\/ytoDck8l12Y","duration":"12:17","thumbnail":{"url":"","id":"","size":""},"inner_tab_is_content_visible":"show","inner_tab_content_2":"<p>les Mundi masterclass we examined ways<br \\\/>to speed up our website server-side and<br \\\/>this week we're going to speed up our<br \\\/>site by reducing plugins and optimizing<br \\\/>content without losing quality or<br \\\/>quantity if we're going to figure out<br \\\/>where and how to trim and streamline our<br \\\/>data we should first understand how our<br \\\/>site data is processed and deployed to<br \\\/>the user which is why we're including an<br \\\/>in-depth explanation in the written<br \\\/>article that we publish with this video<br \\\/>and you can find links to this and more<br \\\/>in the show notes below now meanwhile as<br \\\/>promised for this hands-on masterclass<br \\\/>will audit a site and show just how all<br \\\/>of our theory works in practice and the<br \\\/>best way to learn how to get it right is<br \\\/>to work with an example of a website<br \\\/>done wrong at first glance this site<br \\\/>might seem familiar it does resemble our<br \\\/>recently released photography portfolio<br \\\/>template kit however we've deliberately<br \\\/>tinkered with it so that it's far slower<br \\\/>and nothing like our final product so<br \\\/>let's begin with step 1 and perform an<br \\\/>initial speed test using GT matrix or<br \\\/>Google's PageSpeed insights<br \\\/>now this will show us how our site is<br \\\/>performing and also give us an idea of<br \\\/>where we can start to clean up our site<br \\\/>and shave time off of our page load time<br \\\/>now what we'll be doing next is<br \\\/>reviewing why this site is so slow and<br \\\/>what we can do about it beginning with<br \\\/>speeding up our site platform side<br \\\/>[Music]<br \\\/>as we mentioned last masterclass the<br \\\/>server begins responding to a request by<br \\\/>creating an HTML file this acts as a<br \\\/>blueprint or construction manual for the<br \\\/>browser or clients to know how to render<br \\\/>or reconstruct the data we send into a<br \\\/>viewable site now to do this the server<br \\\/>has to read through all of WordPress's<br \\\/>definitions and guidelines and the good<br \\\/>news is the wordpress are constantly<br \\\/>improving things on their site to help<br \\\/>speed up their part of the process the<br \\\/>bad news is what comes next when the<br \\\/>server has to read through the list of<br \\\/>definitions in the theme and then the<br \\\/>plugins and then the add-ons to retrieve<br \\\/>similar data for this HTML file and yes<br \\\/>we're only talking in milliseconds but<br \\\/>this is where every millisecond counts<br \\\/>so we'll move on to step 2 optimizing<br \\\/>our theme now you're probably aware of<br \\\/>the growing no theme or theme less<br \\\/>movement among professional wordpress<br \\\/>web creators themes have a tendency not<br \\\/>only to limit design possibilities and<br \\\/>flexibility but also add unwanted time<br \\\/>to the service process and this is why<br \\\/>the hello theme became so popular so<br \\\/>fast it's one of the lightest most<br \\\/>flexible themes out there if not the<br \\\/>most and the reason for that is that<br \\\/>it's so light it's practically invisible<br \\\/>next is step number three where we'll<br \\\/>further optimize our platform by<br \\\/>reducing the number of plugins that we<br \\\/>have activated now remember the server<br \\\/>reads through each and every one whether<br \\\/>they are redundant or not now in our<br \\\/>example site we've got separate plugins<br \\\/>for a contact form and a pop-up menu<br \\\/>plugins and add-ons that are already<br \\\/>available on Elementor and available<br \\\/>because developers have gone through all<br \\\/>the trouble of creating these<br \\\/>customizable widgets precisely to allow<br \\\/>web creators to make their sites fast<br \\\/>and as efficient as possible now having<br \\\/>fine-tuned our site platform side we<br \\\/>want to make things easier for the<br \\\/>browser or client and the way that we do<br \\\/>that is by reducing not the quantity but<br \\\/>the weight of our content payload now<br \\\/>looking at the<br \\\/>breakdown of our speed test at what is<br \\\/>commonly known as a waterfall we can see<br \\\/>that the heaviest files are our images<br \\\/>up front you should know that WordPress<br \\\/>automatically reduces the density of any<br \\\/>JPEG assets that we upload to the media<br \\\/>folder which is great but still not<br \\\/>enough<br \\\/>now many designers prefer to use graphic<br \\\/>file types like PNG s for vector art and<br \\\/>images with transparency which WordPress<br \\\/>does not convert but as we've mentioned<br \\\/>in previous master classes there are a<br \\\/>couple of great apps and online sites<br \\\/>like tiny PNG that can help us scale<br \\\/>down images to a far more acceptable<br \\\/>weight and we'll put links to these and<br \\\/>the show notes below now two more things<br \\\/>to consider while processing our graphic<br \\\/>assets are the dimensions and the<br \\\/>resolution now when it comes to size a<br \\\/>bigger picture will not give you better<br \\\/>quality if you have an asset that is<br \\\/>meant to fit in 400 by 400 pixel space<br \\\/>at 2400 by 2400 pixel image is a waste<br \\\/>of weight instead we'll perform step<br \\\/>number 4 and make sure that the images<br \\\/>that we upload to WordPress have the<br \\\/>dimensions of the largest instance that<br \\\/>we will need and most likely that's<br \\\/>going to be for the desktop view of our<br \\\/>site now WordPress automatically creates<br \\\/>several instances of our images so that<br \\\/>users don't have to wait for huge files<br \\\/>to be scaled to fit their screen size<br \\\/>and it's because of this that Elementor<br \\\/>relies on the WordPress media feature<br \\\/>for uploading and relaying images the<br \\\/>next thing that affects the weight of an<br \\\/>image is its resolution which is<br \\\/>measured in the density of pixels per<br \\\/>inch or PPI not to be confused with dpi<br \\\/>which is a similar concept but from the<br \\\/>world of printed graphics it used to be<br \\\/>the case that 72 PPI was sufficient<br \\\/>enough for all of our graphic assets but<br \\\/>these days we need to consider display<br \\\/>formats such as 4k and retina now so far<br \\\/>we have less to fear or worry<br \\\/>about from 4k however retina an Apple<br \\\/>display system is prevalent on iPhones<br \\\/>iPads IMAX and MacBooks and that's a lot<br \\\/>of uses that we need to consider when<br \\\/>designing our sights the pixel density<br \\\/>of retina technology differs from one<br \\\/>device to another and continues to grow<br \\\/>with time currently many experts are<br \\\/>adamant that all of our assets should be<br \\\/>at least 300 PPI while gifts are very<br \\\/>popular assets to use in our design a<br \\\/>great tip is to use short videos instead<br \\\/>as they aren't as heavy as gifts<br \\\/>especially when we're using a linked<br \\\/>video widget moving on to step number 5<br \\\/>use caching or lazy loading plugins and<br \\\/>we've spoken about these in previous<br \\\/>master classes unlike the other plugins<br \\\/>that we have mentioned these plugins are<br \\\/>extremely useful for speeding up page<br \\\/>load time the way that they work in<br \\\/>layman's terms is by using placeholders<br \\\/>on the pages instead of the heavier<br \\\/>images and as the user Scrolls down the<br \\\/>page the missing assets are transferred<br \\\/>as needed from the server without the<br \\\/>user having to waste any extra time<br \\\/>waiting as such google assumes that the<br \\\/>site loads much faster and clocks it and<br \\\/>a much better page load time now like<br \\\/>many of you we recommend WP rocket to<br \\\/>get this job done and you can find a<br \\\/>link to that in the show notes below on<br \\\/>to step number six remove redundant<br \\\/>structure elements there is a chance<br \\\/>that as elemental users you might be<br \\\/>overloading your page with redundant and<br \\\/>unnecessary elements now you'll want to<br \\\/>use as few cons and sections and empty<br \\\/>widgets as you can personally I begin by<br \\\/>trying to keep an entire page in one<br \\\/>section and you'll want to avoid using<br \\\/>external scripts for things like ads<br \\\/>font loaders etc that can have a huge<br \\\/>impact on your website's performance and<br \\\/>we've spoken about this and more in our<br \\\/>masterclass on common mistakes among<br \\\/>Elementor users and there'll be a link<br \\\/>to that in the show notes as well now<br \\\/>this brings us to another concept that<br \\\/>you've been bringing up in the community<br \\\/>and that is step number seven<br \\\/>minification minification refers to the<br \\\/>process of clearing up all of the<br \\\/>redundant content excessive code and<br \\\/>space which also takes up room apps like<br \\\/>kangas HTML minify or minify are tools<br \\\/>designed to identify and remove<br \\\/>redundant and convoluted HTML javascript<br \\\/>and CSS code significantly reducing the<br \\\/>weight of our site data and improving<br \\\/>the site's functionality finally step<br \\\/>number eight once we've cleaned and<br \\\/>streamlined our site we'll run another<br \\\/>speed test using GT metrics Google or<br \\\/>test my site to test our pages desktop<br \\\/>and responsive loading time alongside<br \\\/>industry benchmarks this will give us<br \\\/>scores based on real world data from<br \\\/>user experience now the speed we're<br \\\/>looking for is four seconds or faster<br \\\/>based on extensive research by companies<br \\\/>like Google who have vested interest in<br \\\/>understanding what online users want<br \\\/>getting our page load time down to two<br \\\/>seconds would be wonderful but for<br \\\/>really big sites like online stores less<br \\\/>than four seconds is great<br \\\/>seven seconds or less is not brilliant<br \\\/>but still a pretty good speed another<br \\\/>great way to evaluate our site's<br \\\/>performance is by using speed scorecard<br \\\/>to see how our mobile site speed<br \\\/>compares in different locations within<br \\\/>the geographic regions that we're<br \\\/>targeting in countries around the world<br \\\/>another idea is to compare your page<br \\\/>load time with that of your competitors<br \\\/>sites even if you can't get your load<br \\\/>time down dramatically you still want to<br \\\/>be faster and more reliable than the<br \\\/>competition beyond everything we've<br \\\/>examined it's important to remember that<br \\\/>there is no perfect solution for speed<br \\\/>it all boils down to testing and<br \\\/>retesting and above all finding the<br \\\/>balance between what we need our site to<br \\\/>deliver and how fast we get it there now<br \\\/>as web creators sometimes our mission is<br \\\/>to blow our audiences<br \\\/>minds but sometimes we're risking speed<br \\\/>but this is exactly where creativity and<br \\\/>ingenuity thrive within the limitation<br \\\/>now a great deal of what we've discussed<br \\\/>should be implemented or at least<br \\\/>discussed at the design stage as regular<br \\\/>viewers you probably recall us stressing<br \\\/>the importance of planning stage time<br \\\/>and again and planning for speed is<br \\\/>essential to a website's design some of<br \\\/>you might have noticed that in this<br \\\/>masterclass there were some issues that<br \\\/>we haven't discussed such as throttling<br \\\/>and other topics that we felt would be<br \\\/>better addressed in a later separate<br \\\/>expert level masterclass that we have<br \\\/>planned for the future and speaking of<br \\\/>which if you've enjoyed this masterclass<br \\\/>and you found it helpful insightful or<br \\\/>inspiring make sure that you click on<br \\\/>the subscribe button and tap that bell<br \\\/>so that you don't miss out on our next<br \\\/>master class also since releasing part 1<br \\\/>of this masterclass on speed we've been<br \\\/>enjoying your comments and really great<br \\\/>insight so please if you have any<br \\\/>further advice or tips that could help<br \\\/>other users speed up their websites<br \\\/>please share it in the comments below<br \\\/>and if you have any criticisms we are<br \\\/>equally interested in your thoughts<br \\\/>because after all our goal is to be the<br \\\/>best and helping others excel at their<br \\\/>craft thanks for generating awareness<br \/>the speed of our website is the speed of<br \/>our business speed is something that is<br \/>always on our minds not just when we’re<br \/>designing and building sites but when<br \/>we’re maintaining and managing our sites<br \/>to speed concerns each and every one of<br \/>us no matter what our level of<br \/>experience is and we would sincerely<br \/>love nothing more than to cover as much<br \/>as possible in one fantastic master<br \/>class but you’ve got to admit that there<br \/>would be somewhat ironic if we published<br \/>a master class devoted to speed that<br \/>also ran several hours long<br \/>instead we’re setting aside what we<br \/>consider to be genuine expert material<br \/>for a future separate master class for<br \/>expert level developers and web builders<br \/>meanwhile we’re bringing you a two-part<br \/>master pass chock full of information<br \/>and insight with everything else which<br \/>is a lot in its own right we’ll<br \/>understand the journey that our site<br \/>data takes on route to the user will<br \/>examine the points along this route that<br \/>can potentially slow down our load time<br \/>and the solutions that we can adopt in<br \/>order to avoid these pitfalls and<br \/>accelerate our load speed and of course<br \/>the best ways to test our site speed<br \/>this week will be examining a breakdown<br \/>of the journey focusing on the<br \/>informations point of origin and explore<br \/>ways to speed up our load time server<br \/>side<br \/>because as individuals we don’t normally<br \/>have the capacity needed to serve data<br \/>to countless users simultaneously and<br \/>keep it all safe and secure<br \/>we usually entrust our website data to a<br \/>host now this host allocates a server<br \/>for our needs and the reason that we<br \/>call it a server is because it works<br \/>kind of like a server in a restaurant a<br \/>user wanting to see our site will use a<br \/>browser sometimes referred to as the<br \/>client in this sense to contact our<br \/>server and the moment that this happens<br \/>the whole process kicks into action what<br \/>the user sends through their client is a<br \/>request technically known as an HTTP<br \/>request in return our faithful server<br \/>replies with a responding message that<br \/>contains HTML that’s the information<br \/>telling the client how to organize and<br \/>display all the content of our site as<br \/>well as instructions for the client<br \/>issue further requests for content<br \/>assets that also belong to the website<br \/>that the client didn’t previously know<br \/>about hence we get a series of wrapping<br \/>requests and responses going back and<br \/>forth like a super fast game of ping<br \/>pong the amount of time that it takes<br \/>from the moment a client sends an<br \/>instance of data as a pink till the<br \/>moment pongas received back is the way<br \/>that we measure speed as web builders we<br \/>are responsible for the return journey<br \/>and the time that it takes for a user to<br \/>receive their reply along this return<br \/>journey we have a couple of stations<br \/>having received and processed the<br \/>request from the client our data sets<br \/>out from the server via the platform<br \/>which in our case is WordPress and all<br \/>the plugins installed on it then it<br \/>continues to the system where the client<br \/>is operating to be rendered into the<br \/>content that our user is curious to see<br \/>Google and their counterparts measure<br \/>the time it takes from that very first<br \/>ping until that very last piece of data<br \/>is rendered to complete the page on the<br \/>client side where the user can see it as<br \/>page load time page load time is an<br \/>important criteria for search<br \/>engines as their users look to them to<br \/>provide a list of sites with the best<br \/>user experience possible and we don’t<br \/>have to be googled to know how impatient<br \/>a user can get just waiting for a page<br \/>to load so it shouldn’t surprise us to<br \/>learn that the faster our page loads the<br \/>higher the ranking of that page will be<br \/>in the search results the higher the<br \/>potential we’ll have for traffic to come<br \/>flowing to our site so how do we make<br \/>this happen let’s look at the things<br \/>that can slow our site down and how to<br \/>fix them starting with our first station<br \/>along our journey this server the first<br \/>thing we need to address is the location<br \/>of the server as a rule keep your users<br \/>close and your data closer if you want<br \/>to start a fast food business and your<br \/>clients are predominantly from New York<br \/>establishing your restaurant in Los<br \/>Angeles will not be good business<br \/>instead you should move it as close as<br \/>possible to where your client base is<br \/>located the big hosting companies have<br \/>servers located on every continent and<br \/>it’s up to us to ask our hosts to be<br \/>located as close to our users as<br \/>possible another way to cut the travel<br \/>distance is by using content delivery<br \/>networks or CD ends<br \/>these are caches situated along the road<br \/>between the client and the server that<br \/>store static content assets such as text<br \/>graphics etc that we have no reason to<br \/>change so that the client doesn’t have<br \/>to wait too long to receive the data<br \/>that we’re shipping again this is<br \/>something that we need to ask from our<br \/>hosting service now once our server<br \/>receives a request for data it processes<br \/>it think of it our server placing an<br \/>order with a short-order cook in the<br \/>back kitchen if we want our order to be<br \/>out fast and with no hiccups we need a<br \/>fast reliable kitchen staff or an our<br \/>case effective and efficient server<br \/>software now there are many host<br \/>services that still run on software<br \/>stacks that include Apache MySQL and PHP<br \/>without going into too much technical<br \/>detail what we want to do is make sure<br \/>that the hosts<br \/>service that we work with is or can<br \/>upgrade our service tax software from<br \/>Apache to engine X from MySQL to Moorea<br \/>DB and make sure that our PHP version is<br \/>at least PHP 7 in some cases this alone<br \/>can reduce our page load time by up to<br \/>50% now generally speaking hosting<br \/>services keep our data on shared servers<br \/>in other words we’re sharing the storage<br \/>space and some of the service with other<br \/>web sites residing in the same storage<br \/>system as we are now<br \/>some experts maintain that this too is<br \/>something that can impair our page load<br \/>time and recommend opting for a virtual<br \/>private server or VPS the thing about<br \/>using a VPS is that it also means a lot<br \/>of work for us the moderators worse if<br \/>we’re not experts in such things we’re<br \/>putting our site and our business at an<br \/>unnecessary risk yes you could improve<br \/>your page load time using a VPS but as<br \/>many experts will tell you there are<br \/>several premium hosting service that our<br \/>WordPress dedicated like SiteGround<br \/>WP engine and flywheel already providing<br \/>great service so that we don’t have to<br \/>deal with the headache and the hassle<br \/>having grasped how users get our data<br \/>how the client communicates with our<br \/>server and the ways that we can improve<br \/>and speed up this communication next<br \/>master class will be pushing the pedal<br \/>to the metal and see how we can speed up<br \/>the flow of data even more by modifying<br \/>our WordPress platform and our content<br \/>footprint we’ll also be taking a site<br \/>that will audit to show how all of these<br \/>tips and advice work in practice if you<br \/>have any further advice tips or insight<br \/>that could help other users speed up<br \/>their websites please share it in the<br \/>comments below if you have any<br \/>criticisms we are equally interested in<br \/>your thoughts and if you’ve enjoyed this<br \/>masterclass and you found it helpful<br \/>insightful or inspiring make sure you<br \/>click the subscribe button and tap that<br \/>bell so that you don’t miss out and our<br \/>next<br \/>to class part two of our masterclass on<br \/>accelerating Mundi masterclass we examined ways<br \/>to speed up our website server-side and<br \/>this week we’re going to speed up our<br \/>site by reducing plugins and optimizing<br \/>content without losing quality or<br \/>quantity if we’re going to figure out<br \/>where and how to trim and streamline our<br \/>data we should first understand how our<br \/>site data is processed and deployed to<br \/>the user which is why we’re including an<br \/>in-depth explanation in the written<br \/>article that we publish with this video<br \/>and you can find links to this and more<br \/>in the show notes below now meanwhile as<br \/>promised for this hands-on masterclass<br \/>will audit a site and show just how all<br \/>of our theory works in practice and the<br \/>best way to learn how to get it right is<br \/>to work with an example of a website<br \/>done wrong at first glance this site<br \/>might seem familiar it does resemble our<br \/>recently released photography portfolio<br \/>template kit however we’ve deliberately<br \/>tinkered with it so that it’s far slower<br \/>and nothing like our final product so<br \/>let’s begin with step 1 and perform an<br \/>initial speed test using GT matrix or<br \/>Google’s PageSpeed insights<br \/>now this will show us how our site is<br \/>performing and also give us an idea of<br \/>where we can start to clean up our site<br \/>and shave time off of our page load time<br \/>now what we’ll be doing next is<br \/>reviewing why this site is so slow and<br \/>what we can do about it beginning with<br \/>speeding up our site platform side<br \/>[Music]<br \/>as we mentioned last masterclass the<br \/>server begins responding to a request by<br \/>creating an HTML file this acts as a<br \/>blueprint or construction manual for the<br \/>browser or clients to know how to render<br \/>or reconstruct the data we send into a<br \/>viewable site now to do this the server<br \/>has to read through all of WordPress’s<br \/>definitions and guidelines and the good<br \/>news is the wordpress are constantly<br \/>improving things on their site to help<br \/>speed up their part of the process the<br \/>bad news is what comes next when the<br \/>server has to read through the list of<br \/>definitions in the theme and then the<br \/>plugins and then the add-ons to retrieve<br \/>similar data for this HTML file and yes<br \/>we’re only talking in milliseconds but<br \/>this is where every millisecond counts<br \/>so we’ll move on to step 2 optimizing<br \/>our theme now you’re probably aware of<br \/>the growing no theme or theme less<br \/>movement among professional wordpress<br \/>web creators themes have a tendency not<br \/>only to limit design possibilities and<br \/>flexibility but also add unwanted time<br \/>to the service process and this is why<br \/>the hello theme became so popular so<br \/>fast it’s one of the lightest most<br \/>flexible themes out there if not the<br \/>most and the reason for that is that<br \/>it’s so light it’s practically invisible<br \/>next is step number three where we’ll<br \/>further optimize our platform by<br \/>reducing the number of plugins that we<br \/>have activated now remember the server<br \/>reads through each and every one whether<br \/>they are redundant or not now in our<br \/>example site we’ve got separate plugins<br \/>for a contact form and a pop-up menu<br \/>plugins and add-ons that are already<br \/>available on Elementor and available<br \/>because developers have gone through all<br \/>the trouble of creating these<br \/>customizable widgets precisely to allow<br \/>web creators to make their sites fast<br \/>and as efficient as possible now having<br \/>fine-tuned our site platform side we<br \/>want to make things easier for the<br \/>browser or client and the way that we do<br \/>that is by reducing not the quantity but<br \/>the weight of our content payload now<br \/>looking at the<br \/>breakdown of our speed test at what is<br \/>commonly known as a waterfall we can see<br \/>that the heaviest files are our images<br \/>up front you should know that WordPress<br \/>automatically reduces the density of any<br \/>JPEG assets that we upload to the media<br \/>folder which is great but still not<br \/>enough<br \/>now many designers prefer to use graphic<br \/>file types like PNG s for vector art and<br \/>images with transparency which WordPress<br \/>does not convert but as we’ve mentioned<br \/>in previous master classes there are a<br \/>couple of great apps and online sites<br \/>like tiny PNG that can help us scale<br \/>down images to a far more acceptable<br \/>weight and we’ll put links to these and<br \/>the show notes below now two more things<br \/>to consider while processing our graphic<br \/>assets are the dimensions and the<br \/>resolution now when it comes to size a<br \/>bigger picture will not give you better<br \/>quality if you have an asset that is<br \/>meant to fit in 400 by 400 pixel space<br \/>at 2400 by 2400 pixel image is a waste<br \/>of weight instead we’ll perform step<br \/>number 4 and make sure that the images<br \/>that we upload to WordPress have the<br \/>dimensions of the largest instance that<br \/>we will need and most likely that’s<br \/>going to be for the desktop view of our<br \/>site now WordPress automatically creates<br \/>several instances of our images so that<br \/>users don’t have to wait for huge files<br \/>to be scaled to fit their screen size<br \/>and it’s because of this that Elementor<br \/>relies on the WordPress media feature<br \/>for uploading and relaying images the<br \/>next thing that affects the weight of an<br \/>image is its resolution which is<br \/>measured in the density of pixels per<br \/>inch or PPI not to be confused with dpi<br \/>which is a similar concept but from the<br \/>world of printed graphics it used to be<br \/>the case that 72 PPI was sufficient<br \/>enough for all of our graphic assets but<br \/>these days we need to consider display<br \/>formats such as 4k and retina now so far<br \/>we have less to fear or worry<br \/>about from 4k however retina an Apple<br \/>display system is prevalent on iPhones<br \/>iPads IMAX and MacBooks and that’s a lot<br \/>of uses that we need to consider when<br \/>designing our sights the pixel density<br \/>of retina technology differs from one<br \/>device to another and continues to grow<br \/>with time currently many experts are<br \/>adamant that all of our assets should be<br \/>at least 300 PPI while gifts are very<br \/>popular assets to use in our design a<br \/>great tip is to use short videos instead<br \/>as they aren’t as heavy as gifts<br \/>especially when we’re using a linked<br \/>video widget moving on to step number 5<br \/>use caching or lazy loading plugins and<br \/>we’ve spoken about these in previous<br \/>master classes unlike the other plugins<br \/>that we have mentioned these plugins are<br \/>extremely useful for speeding up page<br \/>load time the way that they work in<br \/>layman’s terms is by using placeholders<br \/>on the pages instead of the heavier<br \/>images and as the user Scrolls down the<br \/>page the missing assets are transferred<br \/>as needed from the server without the<br \/>user having to waste any extra time<br \/>waiting as such google assumes that the<br \/>site loads much faster and clocks it and<br \/>a much better page load time now like<br \/>many of you we recommend WP rocket to<br \/>get this job done and you can find a<br \/>link to that in the show notes below on<br \/>to step number six remove redundant<br \/>structure elements there is a chance<br \/>that as elemental users you might be<br \/>overloading your page with redundant and<br \/>unnecessary elements now you’ll want to<br \/>use as few cons and sections and empty<br \/>widgets as you can personally I begin by<br \/>trying to keep an entire page in one<br \/>section and you’ll want to avoid using<br \/>external scripts for things like ads<br \/>font loaders etc that can have a huge<br \/>impact on your website’s performance and<br \/>we’ve spoken about this and more in our<br \/>masterclass on common mistakes among<br \/>Elementor users and there’ll be a link<br \/>to that in the show notes as well now<br \/>this brings us to another concept that<br \/>you’ve been bringing up in the community<br \/>and that is step number seven<br \/>minification minification refers to the<br \/>process of clearing up all of the<br \/>redundant content excessive code and<br \/>space which also takes up room apps like<br \/>kangas HTML minify or minify are tools<br \/>designed to identify and remove<br \/>redundant and convoluted HTML javascript<br \/>and CSS code significantly reducing the<br \/>weight of our site data and improving<br \/>the site’s functionality finally step<br \/>number eight once we’ve cleaned and<br \/>streamlined our site we’ll run another<br \/>speed test using GT metrics Google or<br \/>test my site to test our pages desktop<br \/>and responsive loading time alongside<br \/>industry benchmarks this will give us<br \/>scores based on real world data from<br \/>user experience now the speed we’re<br \/>looking for is four seconds or faster<br \/>based on extensive research by companies<br \/>like Google who have vested interest in<br \/>understanding what online users want<br \/>getting our page load time down to two<br \/>seconds would be wonderful but for<br \/>really big sites like online stores less<br \/>than four seconds is great<br \/>seven seconds or less is not brilliant<br \/>but still a pretty good speed another<br \/>great way to evaluate our site’s<br \/>performance is by using speed scorecard<br \/>to see how our mobile site speed<br \/>compares in different locations within<br \/>the geographic regions that we’re<br \/>targeting in countries around the world<br \/>another idea is to compare your page<br \/>load time with that of your competitors<br \/>sites even if you can’t get your load<br \/>time down dramatically you still want to<br \/>be faster and more reliable than the<br \/>competition beyond everything we’ve<br \/>examined it’s important to remember that<br \/>there is no perfect solution for speed<br \/>it all boils down to testing and<br \/>retesting and above all finding the<br \/>balance between what we need our site to<br \/>deliver and how fast we get it there now<br \/>as web creators sometimes our mission is<br \/>to blow our audiences<br \/>minds but sometimes we’re risking speed<br \/>but this is exactly where creativity and<br \/>ingenuity thrive within the limitation<br \/>now a great deal of what we’ve discussed<br \/>should be implemented or at least<br \/>discussed at the design stage as regular<br \/>viewers you probably recall us stressing<br \/>the importance of planning stage time<br \/>and again and planning for speed is<br \/>essential to a website’s design some of<br \/>you might have noticed that in this<br \/>masterclass there were some issues that<br \/>we haven’t discussed such as throttling<br \/>and other topics that we felt would be<br \/>better addressed in a later separate<br \/>expert level masterclass that we have<br \/>planned for the future and speaking of<br \/>which if you’ve enjoyed this masterclass<br \/>and you found it helpful insightful or<br \/>inspiring make sure that you click on<br \/>the subscribe button and tap that bell<br \/>so that you don’t miss out on our next<br \/>master class also since releasing part 1<br \/>of this masterclass on
