Thank you.<br \/>Thank you for having me.<br \/>&#8211; So basically, I&#8217;ve known<br \/>your work long before I even<br \/>started working with Elementor.<br \/>I think it was 2009, 2008<br \/>when I first read your marketing articles<br \/>and they&#8217;ve had a great influence on me.<br \/>So I thought, how to<br \/>start this interview to<br \/>first of all, get as much<br \/>information for myself<br \/>and also for all the listeners.<br \/>So what intrigued me to begin with<br \/>was, like, you&#8217;re everywhere.<br \/>I mean, in video and podcasts<br \/>and all the businesses.<br \/>And I was wondering,<br \/>what are your favorite channels?<br \/>And like, why? What&#8217;s the reason?<br \/>&#8211; What do you mean favorite channels?<br \/>Like, for marketing?<br \/>&#8211; Yeah.<br \/>&#8211; It varies. I don&#8217;t think that<br \/>there is one better channel than another.<br \/>I think it varies by<br \/>what are you naturally good at,<br \/>or what do you prefer?<br \/>Some people, like Gary Vaynerchuk,<br \/>are better at video than he is<br \/>at content marketing.<br \/>I&#8217;m better at content marketing<br \/>than I am at video.<br \/>Some people like Tim Ferriss,<br \/>he&#8217;s better at, let&#8217;s say,<br \/>podcasting than maybe I am.<br \/>Right? So it&#8217;s like,<br \/>everyone has their own things<br \/>on what they&#8217;re good,<br \/>or what they&#8217;re not good at.<br \/>&#8211; Okay.<br \/>&#8211; That&#8217;s what they should focus on, right?<br \/>It ends up coming down to<br \/>doing what you&#8217;re best at<br \/>and then going from there.<br \/>&#8211; So like, your niche<br \/>that you&#8217;ve honed for the last,<br \/>a lot of years now,<br \/>is content marketing.<br \/>But that&#8217;s a big bucket,<br \/>so how do you stay on top of all the<br \/>changing technologies<br \/>and changing channels?<br \/>&#8211; Yeah, you keep reading.<br \/>You learn more. Do tests.<br \/>There&#8217;s no real other way.<br \/>You network. You talk to people.<br \/>&#8211; So, that brings me to another question.<br \/>Okay, you have a lot of start-ups<br \/>and you also do content,<br \/>so how do you balance between<br \/>those two things?<br \/>Like, managing and doing actual work<br \/>and doing more tutorial,<br \/>explaining things?<br \/>&#8211; So, you&#8217;re saying<br \/>how do I manage in creating<br \/>the content and my work?<br \/>&#8211; Yeah.<br \/>&#8211; My work is marketing.<br \/>So, for me it&#8217;s the same.<br \/>&#8211; Like, what I mean as an example is<br \/>your podcast, Marketing School,<br \/>It&#8217;s like every day you give away<br \/>all the secrets.<br \/>&#8211; Yeah, but we record it in batches<br \/>so we&#8217;ll record 20 in one day.<br \/>&#8211; That&#8217;s smart. That&#8217;s a good thing.<br \/>I will remember that.<br \/>&#8211; Yeah, that helps.<br \/>And then we usually do it over<br \/>two days in a row,<br \/>and we&#8217;ll crank out 40 in a weekend.<br \/>&#8211; Do these topics, these<br \/>a certain subject?<br \/>Or they&#8217;re just, like, varied<br \/>according to, you know, keyword research?<br \/>&#8211; No, just anything that we think<br \/>would be interesting.<br \/>&#8211; Recently, what do you think is now<br \/>emerging and interesting,<br \/>recent updates and changes on the web?<br \/>&#8211; The big thing that I think<br \/>a lot of businesses<br \/>aren&#8217;t focusing on, and it&#8217;s old,<br \/>but they still don&#8217;t, is branding.<br \/>I think it&#8217;s priceless.<br \/>And I&#8217;m waiting for a lot of<br \/>online businesses to focus on it.<br \/>Like, if you look at<br \/>Nike, they&#8217;re everywhere.<br \/>They&#8217;re everywhere because they know<br \/>that it helps them.<br \/>They&#8217;re not everywhere because<br \/>they&#8217;re like, &#8220;Oh, this TV<br \/>commercial&#8217;s making us more money.&#8221;<br \/>They believe if you continually just do<br \/>TV commercials, radio<br \/>ads, sponsor everything,<br \/>eventually everyone will see you,<br \/>and people will buy you product.<br \/>I think it&#8217;s priceless,<br \/>and it&#8217;s something that a lot of<br \/>people take for granted.<br \/>&#8211; And do you think,<br \/>is there a difference between<br \/>branding a brand like<br \/>Coca-Cola, or Nike, to self-branding?<br \/>&#8211; It&#8217;s very similar.<br \/>You have to provide value, create a story,<br \/>build an emotional connection.<br \/>Yeah, there&#8217;s not much difference<br \/>from what we&#8217;re seeing.<br \/>&#8211; I think, for me personally,<br \/>it&#8217;s also a very interesting topic<br \/>that our viewers also are<br \/>interested in everything<br \/>that has to do with self-branding<br \/>because a lot of them are freelancers.<br \/>They&#8217;re making websites,<br \/>and they want to get their name out.<br \/>Their brand. Their reputation and trust.<br \/>So what are points that<br \/>has worked for you,<br \/>that you think are maybe best practices?<br \/>&#8211; Sure, focus on one<br \/>marketing channel at a time.<br \/>It could be content marketing.<br \/>It could be podcasting.<br \/>It could be SEO.<br \/>You pick one.<br \/>Two, do it for a while.<br \/>Get good at it.<br \/>Three, then it&#8217;s time to<br \/>talk multiple channels.<br \/>Four, focus on branding<br \/>your company, or yourself,<br \/>as an authority.<br \/>You can do interviews,<br \/>you can do podcasts,<br \/>you can speak at conferences.<br \/>You can pick your poison.<br \/>But if you follow those,<br \/>after like a year or two,<br \/>you will see that your brand will grow.<br \/>&#8211; So, let me get it straight.<br \/>So you start off with a great focus,<br \/>and I agree, that&#8217;s a huge thing.<br \/>So like, let&#8217;s say you decided<br \/>every week you put out<br \/>two blog posts.<br \/>&#8211; Yeah.<br \/>&#8211; That are, like, long form blog posts.<br \/>So how do you,<br \/>okay, so that takes a chunk of your time.<br \/>So how do you escalate it later<br \/>to something that also&#8230;<br \/>&#8211; Well, as you grow, you can hire<br \/>people to help out.<br \/>But that&#8217;s why you start<br \/>off focusing on one.<br \/>&#8211; I saw a video that you made,<br \/>which also I really liked,<br \/>and I saw it, I think two years ago.<br \/>It was from a conference<br \/>about growth hacking.<br \/>&#8211; Yeah, I know.<br \/>&#8211; I don&#8217;t know the place,<br \/>but you mentioned<br \/>Dropbox and how they escalated.<br \/>That was a great video, first of all.<br \/>&#8211; Thank you.<br \/>&#8211; And, is your opinion of growth hacking<br \/>the same now, or has something changed?<br \/>And also can you explain a bit<br \/>what it is for our viewers<br \/>like, what it means?<br \/>&#8211; Yeah, it&#8217;s, you know<br \/>I think it is changing.<br \/>It&#8217;s evolving.<br \/>But growth hacking is<br \/>using all departments in<br \/>the organization to help<br \/>grow the business.<br \/>So it&#8217;s not just marketing.<br \/>It could be product. It could be sales.<br \/>It could be design. It<br \/>could be engineering.<br \/>And the key is to get creative<br \/>on how you grow.<br \/>It could be referral programs.<br \/>It could be SEO.<br \/>It could be, you know,<br \/>numerous strategies.<br \/>It could be affiliate programs.<br \/>It could be just focusing<br \/>on conversion optimization.<br \/>But the big thing about growth hacking<br \/>is most people aren&#8217;t focusing<br \/>on being super creative,<br \/>and that&#8217;s a great way<br \/>to grow, right?<br \/>And that&#8217;s what growth<br \/>hacking does so well,<br \/>it&#8217;s being super creative.<br \/>&#8211; Okay, but eventually,<br \/>what does it mean action wise?<br \/>What is the difference between<br \/>just doing a regular PPC campaign<br \/>and growth hacking, like<br \/>something that would scale?<br \/>&#8211; PPC can be part of growth hacking.<br \/>There is no difference there.<br \/>The big changes in growth hacking,<br \/>it&#8217;s about creativity.<br \/>It&#8217;s about modifying the whole product.<br \/>The organization working as one to grow,<br \/>instead of just saying,<br \/>&#8220;Hey, marketing, you just grab traffic,<br \/>and design, you just make it look pretty.&#8221;<br \/>It&#8217;s everyone having the same goal.<br \/>Design and marketing can combine and say,<br \/>&#8220;Hey, how do we get more visitors<br \/>to convert into customers?&#8221;<br \/>Engineering can help and say,<br \/>&#8220;Hey, let&#8217;s modify the on-boarding<br \/>flow of the product or service,<br \/>so that way it can be usable<br \/>and we can get more people to use it<br \/>versus bouncing away.&#8221;<br \/>&#8211; So like, if you get also,<br \/>if you have a support department,<br \/>you can use the questions that they get<br \/>to, like, leverage it<br \/>and maybe create tutorials<br \/>from it, et cetera.<br \/>&#8211; Exactly.<br \/>&#8211; Okay, cool. And like, what kind of<br \/>examples have you seen of<br \/>businesses that manage to,<br \/>that you personally had involvement in?<br \/>I know you had the cool project<br \/>of growing from zero to $100,000.<br \/>&#8211; Yeah, I don&#8217;t do too much consulting<br \/>so I don&#8217;t get involved in<br \/>too many projects, but like<br \/>if you look at a lot of<br \/>companies who&#8217;ve grown fast,<br \/>from Dropbox to Slack to Evernote, right?<br \/>They&#8217;re all leveraging a lot<br \/>of these tactics.<br \/>&#8211; One of the strategies that I think<br \/>was very big, I think two years ago,<br \/>was everybody was talking about,<br \/>&#8220;10x the content&#8221;<br \/>You know, 10x content.<br \/>But the problem is, like,<br \/>now a lot of people 10x<br \/>so you see a lot of articles<br \/>that are, you know,<br \/>a lot of graphics and screenshots.<br \/>So how do you continue to 10x<br \/>today when you get<br \/>such a competition?<br \/>&#8211; So, you do that<br \/>and that you make 10 times<br \/>of those content pieces.<br \/>(laughs)<br \/>&#8211; Okay.<br \/>&#8211; So, if it&#8217;s now longer<br \/>than 3,000 words with more images,<br \/>instead of writing one a day,<br \/>you write ten a day.<br \/>&#8211; And this you do with the<br \/>outsourcing, of course?<br \/>&#8211; Yeah, you can hire editors, outsource.<br \/>You can do whatever you want<br \/>to scale your business.<br \/>&#8211; So one of the things that I think<br \/>about growth hacking,<br \/>for us at least, is that<br \/>when we developed and marketed Elementor,<br \/>we went to the global market.<br \/>And I think this really helped,<br \/>because you have, you know,<br \/>there&#8217;s a lot less competition<br \/>in other countries than in the U.S.<br \/>I think a lot of new businesses<br \/>just focus on the top countries,<br \/>the U.S., U.K., and they<br \/>miss out on a lot of<br \/>business opportunities.<br \/>So have you seen<br \/>surprises in those fields?<br \/>I know you also have<br \/>focus on global marketing.<br \/>&#8211; Yeah. It&#8217;s, you know,<br \/>as a company, what you have<br \/>to worry about is,<br \/>it&#8217;s not about the details.<br \/>It&#8217;s not about global marketing.<br \/>It&#8217;s not about strategies.<br \/>It&#8217;s not about any of that.<br \/>What you need to figure out<br \/>is what are you good at,<br \/>and how can you just scale that.<br \/>And then later on, you can expand.<br \/>I think people think about<br \/>this stuff too much.<br \/>I think they&#8217;re trying too<br \/>many different tactics.<br \/>I think they&#8217;re worrying<br \/>about their competitors too much.<br \/>Instead of just focusing on<br \/>what they&#8217;re amazing at.<br \/>&#8211; So in that respect,<br \/>if you have a business,<br \/>I mean an existing business,<br \/>that they have their clients<br \/>that, I don&#8217;t know,<br \/>take their time and their tasks,<br \/>and they have a mediocre income<br \/>but they want to scale.<br \/>So I think it&#8217;s interesting to ask,<br \/>what do you recommend?<br \/>Like, what&#8217;s best practices for<br \/>leveraging an existing business<br \/>that is stalling?<br \/>&#8211; You know, well you have to<br \/>look at your funnel.<br \/>So look at where the drop off is<br \/>and why is it stalling,<br \/>and that&#8217;s the area you<br \/>should focus on first.<br \/>For example, if everyone&#8217;s<br \/>dropping off on your homepage<br \/>because they don&#8217;t understand<br \/>the product or service,<br \/>then you fix your homepage.<br \/>If everyone&#8217;s dropping off<br \/>on your checkout page<br \/>&#8217;cause they don&#8217;t like something there,<br \/>then figure out what&#8217;s wrong with<br \/>your checkout page so you can fix it.<br \/>You can survey people to<br \/>figure out what&#8217;s wrong,<br \/>you can look at analytics,<br \/>and then you can take the rest from there.<br \/>&#8211; Okay, that makes sense.<br \/>Also, how do you do the balance<br \/>between like, okay, you focus on,<br \/>this was a huge challenge for me,<br \/>like understanding how much,<br \/>how you split the pie between<br \/>the content you&#8217;re creating,<br \/>the outreach you&#8217;re doing,<br \/>and the PPC ads you&#8217;re doing?<br \/>How do you know the right balance?<br \/>&#8211; You don&#8217;t worry about the right balance.<br \/>You worry about what&#8217;s working,<br \/>and then whatever&#8217;s working,<br \/>you do more of it.<br \/>Whatever&#8217;s not working,<br \/>you stop doing that.<br \/>&#8211; Okay, like, adaptive, agile approach.<br \/>I like it.<br \/>So what&#8217;s your biggest,<br \/>it&#8217;s not easy to ask, but like<br \/>your biggest failure?<br \/>Like, you said, &#8220;I was wrong here.&#8221;<br \/>&#8211; I have a lot of them, but my biggest&#8230;<br \/>Well, forget what biggest failure<br \/>was because people can&#8217;t learn from that,<br \/>let&#8217;s talk about why I failed.<br \/>And one of the biggest reasons on<br \/>why I fail, and I have so many times,<br \/>is distractions. I don&#8217;t focus.<br \/>Focus on one thing, and do it right.<br \/>And you will grow.<br \/>&#8211; You know, we have a<br \/>saying in our company.<br \/>Like, by the book. Do it.<br \/>Don&#8217;t skip any steps.<br \/>&#8211; Yeah, we look at it as more like<br \/>instead of trying to do too many<br \/>businesses or trying to do too many<br \/>things to grow, just pick one and<br \/>then just be the best at it.<br \/>&#8211; Yeah, but when you<br \/>reach the success that,<br \/>I mean, I think you&#8217;re the&#8230;<br \/>It&#8217;s fair to say that you&#8217;re one<br \/>of the top marketers in the world today.<br \/>Like, easily top three.<br \/>So when you reach this success,<br \/>how do you, and I have to be modest,<br \/>our plug-in also is one<br \/>of the top in Orpris,<br \/>so how do you go to the next level?<br \/>How do you keep on challenging yourself?<br \/>&#8211; Self-motivation. There&#8217;s<br \/>nothing to challenge.<br \/>It&#8217;s the drive within you.<br \/>You either wanna do it,<br \/>or you won&#8217;t, right?<br \/>You don&#8217;t have to continue<br \/>to challenge yourself,<br \/>you&#8217;ll want to naturally<br \/>be better and progress.<br \/>If you&#8217;re not, then you should find<br \/>a different industry to be in.<br \/>&#8211; And what challenges you today?<br \/>&#8211; My challenge is growing and being<br \/>bigger than my competitors.<br \/>It&#8217;s very hard.<br \/>I&#8217;m trying to figure out how to be<br \/>It&#8217;s not easy.<br \/>&#8211; I saw that recently you&#8217;ve<br \/>done a lot of,<br \/>you&#8217;ve started doing video.<br \/>So can you tell a bit about,<br \/>I think it&#8217;s lately, I think it&#8217;s<br \/>the last year or something.<br \/>So can you explain a bit about<br \/>what are your impressions of this field,<br \/>because I think for us it was amazing.<br \/>&#8211; I love it.<br \/>I do videos to connect<br \/>more with my readers<br \/>and other people out there.<br \/>I love it.<br \/>I wanna do more and more videos.<br \/>&#8211; Yeah, like YouTube is a huge channel.<br \/>&#8211; Huge.<br \/>&#8211; Yeah. For us, that<br \/>was one of the biggest<br \/>leaps that we had in marketing.<br \/>When one of our videos became viral<br \/>and we got a lot of subscribers from it,<br \/>and it was just a 10 minute video<br \/>that didn&#8217;t take us too much to make.<br \/>And this leads me to another topic,<br \/>risk-taking in marketing.<br \/>So as marketers, we,<br \/>of course, have risks.<br \/>Like, when you create a campaign<br \/>or anything you do actually is a risk.<br \/>Can you share some of the risks<br \/>that you&#8217;ve recently<br \/>done or tried, you know?<br \/>&#8211; Yeah, I&#8217;ve tried<br \/>expanding internationally<br \/>when I don&#8217;t speak the language,<br \/>which is hard. It&#8217;s not easy.<br \/>I&#8217;ve tried doing things like<br \/>re-shifting products where you&#8217;re going<br \/>from paid to try to build a free version,<br \/>and cut off your revenue stream.<br \/>But yeah, I&#8217;m testing a lot of stuff<br \/>that is always tough decisions.<br \/>&#8211; And do you have, like, a focus now?<br \/>In your own, I mean because-<br \/>&#8211; I do. My focus is traffic generation.<br \/>That&#8217;s all I do every day.<br \/>I figure out how to get more traffic.<br \/>I do nothing else, I-<br \/>&#8211; Across channels?<br \/>&#8211; All channels, yes.<br \/>Free, paid, everything.<br \/>&#8211; Okay, and I want to ask you<br \/>a question that is related also<br \/>to our product.<br \/>You know, we have a page builder<br \/>that people seem to like,<br \/>and I wanted to know,<br \/>what are your thoughts on<br \/>page-building and landing pages,<br \/>and how they&#8230;<br \/>&#8211; Yeah, everyone should have landing pages<br \/>because you can end up optimizing<br \/>your conversions more by<br \/>sending people to specific pages.<br \/>And why would you pay<br \/>designers or developers to create them<br \/>when you can just use tools to<br \/>make them really fast?<br \/>It&#8217;s cheaper, quicker, and you&#8217;ll<br \/>find out what works.<br \/>And then if it works,<br \/>you can keep editing and testing<br \/>and changing things up.<br \/>&#8211; I want to ask you one<br \/>final question about,<br \/>a lot of our users are<br \/>freelance designers,<br \/>so if I am a freelance designer,<br \/>how would you recommend<br \/>starting off and&#8230;<br \/>I don&#8217;t know what I&#8217;m good at yet.<br \/>I know I&#8217;m good at designing.<br \/>How would you recommend I start<br \/>building my business right,<br \/>in terms of gaining conversions,<br \/>in terms of gaining my<br \/>audience and subscribers, et cetera.<br \/>&#8211; So you&#8217;re saying<br \/>how would you start off with building<br \/>your audience and<br \/>subscribers and following?<br \/>&#8211; Yeah.<br \/>&#8211; Focus on one channel.<br \/>You pick either videos,<br \/>podcasting, or content.<br \/>You start with there.<br \/>You increase your content production<br \/>in any of those channels,<br \/>and you wait six months to a year<br \/>and you&#8217;ll start building up a following.<br \/>Whatever content you create,<br \/>promote it on your social profiles.<br \/>Ask other people within your space<br \/>to promote it, and over time<br \/>you&#8217;ll build up an audience.<br \/>&#8211; You have one strategy that says<br \/>post every week, as much as you can,<br \/>and you have Brian Dean<br \/>who recommends like,<br \/>no you can have like 16 videos<br \/>and just make them top notch,<br \/>and that&#8217;s the way.<br \/>&#8211; Do what works.<br \/>You just have to figure out<br \/>what&#8217;s right for you.<br \/>I prefer daily, Brian prefers<br \/>like, maybe monthly.<br \/>Both strategies work.<br \/>He&#8217;s successful. I&#8217;ve done OK.<br \/>But you have to figure<br \/>out what&#8217;s right for you.<br \/>&#8211; Okay, Neil.
