long-form<br \/>content into a visually captivating<br \/>masterpiece<br \/>now you<br \/>the better part of a week researching a<br \/>subject drinking coffee gathering<br \/>background information in-depth insight<br \/>drinking more coffee interviewing<br \/>experts colleagues and friends keyword<br \/>research more coffee than sitting<br \/>through all that writing your first<br \/>draft running out of coffee<br \/>your second draft but brave is still<br \/>your trying T and you have created a<br \/>third draft and lo and behold it&#8217;s your<br \/>epic blog post four thousand words long<br \/>you uploads it to the site and you&#8217;ve<br \/>got to admit it&#8217;s hideous<br \/>it&#8217;s a drab and dreary wall of words a<br \/>daunting monstrous mass of font and in<br \/>all honesty even you wouldn&#8217;t read it<br \/>and that&#8217;s because there&#8217;s more to epic<br \/>blog posts than written concent alone<br \/>what&#8217;s missing in a word visuals visuals<br \/>aren&#8217;t merely for decoration they create<br \/>spacing elements that provide the<br \/>written matter with pace and rhythm<br \/>they also tweet the interest of the<br \/>reader and things like a cool graphic<br \/>can taunt them to move forward a great<br \/>long post must be well-designed<br \/>and you could argue that long-form is an<br \/>art form now if this seems overwhelming<br \/>don&#8217;t worry we&#8217;ve got you covered<br \/>because today we&#8217;re sharing the top<br \/>design tricks that our content team uses<br \/>to create the layouts with visual<br \/>content that make our articles look like<br \/>the kind that you would like to post so<br \/>here we are at square one I&#8217;ve opened a<br \/>new post I&#8217;m in the elements or editor<br \/>and the only thing I&#8217;ve done so far is<br \/>pasted my text using the text editor<br \/>widgets and the heading widgets making<br \/>sure of course that I have pasted it<br \/>cleanly with no formatting I&#8217;m going to<br \/>be using pre saved global widgets and<br \/>templates in this tutorial all from our<br \/>very own posts to give you an idea of<br \/>how we can use appealing visual elements<br \/>to break up this massive text into<br \/>digestible sections because right now a<br \/>reader will be looking at this and<br \/>thinking that it looks like too much<br \/>hard work or I really don&#8217;t have the<br \/>time and patience to sit through all<br \/>this now<br \/>first I&#8217;ll use a collage of images to<br \/>break up the top of my article I&#8217;ll add<br \/>it in a new section and find my collage<br \/>template<br \/>as you can see it&#8217;s already looking much<br \/>better breaking up that first paragraph<br \/>perhaps these are images that I will be<br \/>using individually later on in the<br \/>article<br \/>perhaps they are examples of what can be<br \/>done with a certain technique or tool<br \/>the goal here is to whet the appetite of<br \/>the reader we&#8217;re confirming that this<br \/>article is related to what they are<br \/>interested in possibly saying that by<br \/>the end of this article readers will<br \/>have the knowledge needed to create<br \/>similar images now I&#8217;ll use a block<br \/>quote to break up the next section of my<br \/>article now I don&#8217;t see them as text<br \/>because they have more decorative<br \/>aspects they can also be engaging if you<br \/>make them clickable I&#8217;ll select the<br \/>block quote global widget and drag it to<br \/>here now I will click unlink which is<br \/>very important because so long as this<br \/>global widget is linked any changes I<br \/>make for this post will be applied<br \/>wherever this widget appears across the<br \/>site all this space that we&#8217;re<br \/>generating translates into a fresh<br \/>streamlined feel that plays a major part<br \/>in the experience the last thing we want<br \/>the reader to feel is overwhelmed the<br \/>next block of text is fairly big so now<br \/>I&#8217;ll use an icon list to create a nice<br \/>field of space again I&#8217;m going to select<br \/>my icon list global widget and unlink<br \/>again now apart from creating a nice<br \/>breadth of space in the article lists<br \/>are also great when you want to<br \/>summarize your main points or list pros<br \/>and cons don&#8217;t forget that as human<br \/>beings we tend to enjoy lists because<br \/>they help us organize detailed<br \/>information so that we can remember it<br \/>better this is true for any lists by the<br \/>way numbered lists bullet lists even a<br \/>table of contents you might want to<br \/>consider turning one of your detail<br \/>heavy paragraphs into a list for example<br \/>I&#8217;ve taken the paragraph below and<br \/>already created this list so I can now<br \/>delete the paragraph and I&#8217;ve got a nice<br \/>coherent list right now I&#8217;m gonna bring<br \/>out the big guns and place a video as<br \/>with all these visual elements you can<br \/>place them anywhere some will always<br \/>place videos at the top of their power<br \/>others in the middle we feel that every<br \/>visual element should have a reason will<br \/>it draw interest will it keep the reader<br \/>engaged every post has its own<br \/>personality now as you can see this<br \/>video is running on a loop very similar<br \/>to an idea of embedding a gif image<br \/>which by the way is another great way to<br \/>break up chunks of written matter but<br \/>videos offer better quality and more<br \/>detailed than a gif this is a short<br \/>video and it&#8217;s self hosted now the<br \/>advantage of that as opposed to using<br \/>say YouTube videos for example is that<br \/>commercial video platforms will always<br \/>have that distinct look and UI they<br \/>don&#8217;t always loop nicely either this way<br \/>we have a nice organic looking feature<br \/>running smoothly on a seamless loop<br \/>speaking of organizing information<br \/>visualizing data with graphs and tables<br \/>is another great way to break up a<br \/>massive text and make the experience<br \/>just that more engaging this way readers<br \/>get a break from constantly reading left<br \/>to right now they can read top to bottom<br \/>we also enjoy that moment when we try to<br \/>decipher the structure of a graph like<br \/>solving a puzzle now this area here<br \/>looks far too dense and I&#8217;ll just break<br \/>that up by putting some of it in a<br \/>separate section now that I&#8217;ve created a<br \/>gap I&#8217;m going to bring up my table<br \/>segment template and there we are now we<br \/>can go on and on like this but I think<br \/>that you guys are literally getting the<br \/>picture here now let&#8217;s just remind<br \/>ourselves of what our content looked<br \/>like before and now for the big reveal<br \/>I mean what a difference of widget makes<br \/>but now that we&#8217;ve seen what we should<br \/>be doing let&#8217;s go over what we should<br \/>not be doing<br \/>text alignment and spacing what we want<br \/>to do is avoid the same kinds of things<br \/>that cause reading fatigue and eyestrain<br \/>don&#8217;t let the text run from one side of<br \/>the screen to the other especially as<br \/>most desktop screens are wide and it can<br \/>become extremely tiresome to stay<br \/>focused following a line running the<br \/>entire length of the screen don&#8217;t make<br \/>the spacing between the paragraphs and<br \/>headings too dense again<br \/>this causes readers to lose their place<br \/>and makes it very hard to follow and<br \/>focus the same goes for lengthy<br \/>sentences and lengthy paragraphs too<br \/>many links yes bank linking is good but<br \/>this is too much this looks like Swiss<br \/>cheese at this point too many keywords<br \/>spread too densely is also a major nono<br \/>Google BOTS are not programmed by idiots<br \/>they will know that when keywords are<br \/>too dense the writer has ulterior<br \/>motives &#8211; providing in-depth content at<br \/>this point Google is probably thinking<br \/>that this Swiss cheese also has a bad<br \/>case of the measles don&#8217;t create long<br \/>listy paragraphs again we want the<br \/>reader to get engaged not get frustrated<br \/>when they can&#8217;t solve this Gordian knot<br \/>of data depending on the content you may<br \/>want to create a table for something<br \/>like this or to write short paragraphs<br \/>this structure is going to frustrate<br \/>even the most avid reddit readers too<br \/>many images make it too difficult to<br \/>read and follow in a case like this it<br \/>would have been better<br \/>if there were no images at all there is<br \/>a rule of thumb that people are quoting<br \/>when you should be using a graphic image<br \/>or video every 80 to 100 words or so but<br \/>it&#8217;s just a rule of thumb use your gut<br \/>instinct as a designer to make it<br \/>Pleasant or use your gut instinct as a<br \/>content creator to write in a<br \/>captivating way so that your material is<br \/>clear and engaging on its own merits<br \/>speaking of writing make sure that you<br \/>keep your headlines clear make sure that<br \/>your headlines motivate interest in<br \/>curiosity but make them clear so that<br \/>even at a glance we know what<br \/>is you&#8217;re going to be speaking about in<br \/>the paragraph below so that this title<br \/>here Y tells me very little I mean it<br \/>hints towards something but let&#8217;s make<br \/>it a little more informative and<br \/>maintain some of that curiosity another<br \/>thing is don&#8217;t lose your structure as<br \/>human beings we like all things to have<br \/>a beginning a middle and an end and as<br \/>readers we are no different make sure<br \/>that you actually have an introduction<br \/>and introduce what it is your pieces<br \/>about make sure that the middle builds<br \/>upon itself further and further in a<br \/>linear fashion and then draw a<br \/>conclusion a summary perhaps even ask a<br \/>question to get the reader thinking<br \/>about what you wrote hours after they<br \/>finished reading we&#8217;ve just reviewed<br \/>different ways to use visuals to turn<br \/>big bland blocks of written content into<br \/>prolonged and engaging reading<br \/>experiences in doing so we hope we have<br \/>inspired you to use your ingenuity and<br \/>creative prowess to push the limitations<br \/>of the tools and widgets at your<br \/>disposal
